Atur
With the arrival of the solstice we are
introduced to a small community in the
South West of England, headed by Clan
elder and father, Taloch. With this
backdrop we are introduced to the lives of
both Taloch and his 15 year old son,
Connach, who is experiencing the turmoil
of youth and facing the prospect of being
home educated. Together they navigate
this time, bringing themselves closer
together by exploring their shared
heritage, but also potentially isolating
themselves further.

Sam is a documentary filmmaker, focused on observational and character led narratives. Often taking a mixed media approach, he explores the grey zone between artifice and reality through the use of textures and atmosphere.
Sam studied at University of the Arts, London, where he discovered documentary filmmaking. This became a way of engaging with both his Media and Cultural Studies degree and the world around him. As a person with ASD, filmmaking provided Sam with the opportunity to express himself through non-written and non-linear forms of commutation - and is an advocate for people with learning and developmental difficulties to have access to filmmaking.
Following his undergraduate degree he was selected as the UK representative for the Aristoteles Workshop in Romania, which fosters a new generation of creative documentary filmmakers from around the world, where he was introduced to directing documentary.
He then refined his skills further through a Masters in Documentary Film Directing at the University of Edinburgh. There he achieved a distinction for his film Atur, which premiered in 2024 at British Shorts Film Festival in Berlin, receiving 6th place overall in the Audience Award competition.
He has since gone on to develop his own documentary projects, where he is seeking to deconstruct notions of Britishness and offer an opportunity to reimagine the British Isles.
A father and son attempt to navigate the turmoils of parenthood and youth, whilst their shared identity both blossoms and isolates them, albeit together.
This film presents an opportunity for us to tap into the internal dichotomy of loneliness and connection, something that I believe is simultaneously present in all of us.
I find that as filmmakers we are always taking away from people. Taking stories, feelings, images. For this reason, I find my practice to be ever evolving towards something that acts as a dialogue between both the filmmaker and the participant.
