Experiencing Interruptions?

EVILA

EVILA (Ai Piedi di Eva) is a surreal labyrinth where desire becomes both weapon and prison. Eva, or perhaps Evila – a name whispering “alive” and “evil” – is a magnetic enigma that bends reality and the fates of those who cross her path. In a vortex of dreamlike visions and fragmented truths, the protagonists lose themselves in an obsession that consumes them, teetering on the edge of adoration and self-destruction. The cinematography, at times saturated with pulsating blues and reds, amplifies the emotional intensity, turning each scene into a living painting. Every desire is a fire that burns alive. EVILA is not just a film but an experience that challenges the mind and seduces the soul, leaving viewers to wonder: who is truly alive, and who is already ashes?

Director Biography - Luigi Scaramuzzi

A lifelong cinephile with a deep love for ’80s horror films, I took my first steps into filmmaking as a self-taught director, driven by a relentless visual creativity. Growing up surrounded by my parents’ video store collection, I developed an early fascination with the technical aspects of cinema—framing, editing, and cinematography—more than just storytelling.

It all began with hands-on experimentation: using two VHS recorders to cut, copy, and re-edit home videos, teaching myself the basics of film editing. After my debut as a director with Evila (2009), I went through a long period of inactivity behind the camera. However, I never stopped writing, developing stories, and envisioning new projects.

In 2024, after a 15-year hiatus from directing, I returned to filmmaking with the short film Eige, a personal project that resonated with audiences and critics alike, winning three awards and proving that my cinematic vision was still alive and evolving.

2025 marks a full-circle moment with EVILA, a remake of my very first film. Revisiting this project with over a decade of experience, I’ve infused it with a refined visual style while staying true to the raw, DIY spirit of the original. It’s both a tribute to my roots and a bold step forward in my craft.

With a deep respect for the past but an eagerness to innovate, I continue to explore new ways to tell stories through film, always embracing the independent and experimental approach that has defined my journey.

"Evila" is a return to my roots. Sixteen years ago, with my first film, I began exploring the destructive nature of obsession. Today, with greater awareness but the same creative urgency, I revisit those themes through a deeper, more mature lens, set against the rugged landscapes of Puglia.
This short film is not just a remake: it’s an emotional and visual reimagining of the conflict between desire and self-destruction. Uncontrolled obsession doesn’t just consume its object—it erodes the one who desires. Evila examines the fine line between love and possession, idealization and annihilation, through characters marked by inner turmoil and psychological scars, in a language that is both personal and universal.
The visual aesthetic, inspired by cinema that blends introspection and tension, shapes this intimate narrative. Born as an independent work, Evila stems from a deep need to give voice to a thought that has never truly left me. In 17 minutes, this film captures an emotional journey that reflects both my origins and a new artistic vision, rooted in the Mediterranean and open to the world.
