Experiencing Interruptions?

Átha

Filmed on the Beara Peninsula, including unique archival family footage, Átha (the Irish word for ford) forms part of the name of the rural townland featured, Cill Átha. Drawn to the concept of the ford as a liminal space, traversing the gap between past and present, this video examines the complicated relationships between labour, land use and the politics of belonging, and considers how stories, images and fictions of the past help construct present realities. The words of the 9th century poem, Lament of the Cailleach (wise woman)of Beara, drift on the wind, contrasting with those of 15th century Cromwellian economic philosopher and local landowner, William Petty.
