Asteroid Season
In a lonesome frozen land, a feisty hermit lives a charmed life. Her quirky self-sufficient routine is happily fixed, but catastrophic change waits just around the corner to transform her environment and change her outlook. When an enormous asteroid arrives overhead, her sheltered reality will face a cosmic shake-up. In the course of losing the world she knows, the hermit just might find the companionship she’s always hoped for.

Earthstar Smith is an artist and filmmaker based in Vancouver, BC. His short animated works include the ‘Genetisphere’ animated TV pilot, selected for the New York Television Festival’s independent pilot competition in 2009. Working on a mix of solo and collaborative projects, Earthstar acts as writer, director, storyboard artist, character designer, and animator. His future goals include directing epic animated features and charming cartoon series.
In creating Asteroid Season, I used a mix of traditional and digital art to give the film a painted storybook quality. My mission was to encapsulate the appeal of an upbeat fantasy epic within the framework of a short, action driven narrative. Asteroid Season speaks to both children and adults, drawing on themes of cataclysmic environmental upheaval, and the universal need for friendship.
