Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter
I come from Kazakhstan, a nation that was once part of a Russian colony. Growing up, I came to understand—on a deeply personal level—the power of storytelling and how it shapes identity. As the saying goes, “Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” For centuries, my country’s history was written by others—outsiders who never fully grasped our soul, our struggles, or our victories.
But now, as part of an independent generation of Kazakh people, I am determined to reclaim our narrative. I believe that who tells the story matters because storytelling is more than entertainment—it’s an act of self-definition and empowerment.
Driven by this belief, I feel I am on a mission far greater than myself: to tell stories that reflect our voice, our truth, and our perspective. As Kazakh poet Abai Kunanbayuly wrote, “A person who seeks wisdom must also seek their roots.” For me, storytelling is a way of reconnecting with those roots while sharing them with the world.
In pursuit of this dream, I came to Los Angeles, where I earned my master’s degree in Filmmaking at the New York Film Academy. My journey isn’t just about honing my craft—it’s about becoming a vessel for the stories that deserve to be heard.
