Kyle Michael Porter is a filmmaker, writer, and musician from the Pacific Northwest. He has produced numerous short documentaries and two feature documentaries, "In Their Memory: The Stanwood Memorial Barn" and "Unwasted: The Future of Business on Earth." He was a founding member of the band Lazer Kitty and record label Unsound America. He is a partner of the film production company Rogue River Pictures.
"Artifact" is an entirely self-produced narrative short film, shot without a script or crew on the Alvord Desert Playa in Southeast Oregon. Using gimbal cameras and a drone, I was able to stand both in front of and "behind" the camera. Ideally, this creates the sensation of watching a crewed and scripted short film. The landscape of this area is deeply inspiring, and as the film's creator I could feel the "energy" of this place informing my spur-of-the-moment creative decisions. The linear or logical elements to the story were surreptitiously provided by the energy of this location. I only needed to point the camera at myself in this environment for something evocative to emerge. The film was made "through" me as much as it was made by me.
