i'm a 15 year old film student entering my second year of film school, this documentary was my final grade 9 (or freshman) project!
Art Works is a documentary that boils down to the creative process of art about sexual assault or sexual harassment and how it affects the viewer and the creator. It documents the experience of creation which is why I chose to show not only the art that the film truly revolves around but also other pieces my interviewees have created. The creative process is something that I believe is deeply personal and something that I find helps me through a lot of problems.
Writing, painting, filming, photographing. These are all things that my interviewees have done to put their creativity out into the world and each of these pieces carries a deeper meaning to them. Art Works serves to explore that meaning and the process that came before it.
I wanted my film to feel comforting despite its serious subject matter which is why I chose music that is very calming and serene. I chose the light, almost pastel colours (in the case of Anael and Anna’s backgrounds) for this same reason. I personally find the pink, purples, and blues very comforting colours, purple especially is a colour known for its calming abilities! I wanted Art Works to be an open space for conversation, during and after production. I also wanted my viewer to leave feeling understood and heard because the issues of sexual harassment and sexual assault are something that most women and girls have unfortunately faced at some point in their lives.
Overall, I want my film to be a safe space for women and girls to feel heard and also showcase the art made by women and girls. I also wanted to showcase how the creative process of artwork can be so deeply personal and help you cope or understand what you’re facing. My film is a documentation of works about sexual assault and sexual harassment and how everyone is affected by these works of art, even the creators themselves.
