ABOUT US
Art Slope – Shorts in the Slope is an initiative of the Arts Committee of the Park Slope Civic Council, which has sought to enhance the lives of Park Slope residents and visitors since 1896. (For more information on the Civic Council’s many neighborhood activities, please visit: parkslopeciviccouncil.org. )

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The inspiration for the Film Festival came out of September 2016's popular 9-day neighborhood-wide arts festival, Art Slope ‘16, which featured the work of over 150 artists from across all disciplines in more than 50 venues, including 9 large installations in Prospect Park and a shorts screening curated by Bill Schaumberg.

Bill Schaumberg's screening led to the inaugural Art Slope '17 - Shorts in the Slope short film festival, which took place over October 13-14 at the Berkeley Carroll School's state-of-the-art theater. The Arts Committee reviewed over 90 short film submissions form around the world and featured a festival line up of 30 films, with subject matter ranging from narrative, documentary, animations, humor and horror. (Please see below for a listing of the winning short films - and go to Artslope.nyc for the complete festival lineup, as well as photographs from the screenings and closing party/awards ceremony at Shapeshifter Lab in nearby Gowanus, Brooklyn.)

On October 13, 2018, Art Slope presented a special screening of the 1953 masterpiece "Little Fugitive," introduced by the filmmaker's daughter, Mary Engel, and which included a talk on Coney Island in the 1950's by noted architectural historian Francis Morrone and songs from the era performed by members of Brooklyn's own "Opera on Tap."

  • Terrific festival! Had a blast screening my short "Sure-Fire" there! The staff is warm and welcoming, the venue is great, and the programming is top-notch! Really enjoyed meeting the other filmmakers, and the awards party was at another cool venue in the neighborhood. This is an up-and-coming festival that I highly recommend submitting to!

Thank you Art Slope 19 for selecting my film "Where's Lilli?". It was a wonderful experience to be a part of this festival. All the films I saw were top notch and it was a joy to be a part of such fun group of shorts. The people who run this festival are wonderful, very welcoming and deeply care about the filmmakers. The awards ceremony was also a lot of fun, great opportunity to network.

Home run for Art Slope-Shorts in the Slope '19. Great group of people running this event in a superb screening environment. Everyone (filmmakers, audience, organizers) were so warm and receptive from start to finish. T-shirts, wine/snack receptions, lively Q & A sessions lent to a really enjoyable day in Park Slope. I was blown away by every film I saw on Saturday (several sessions). It was an honor to screen our short mockumentary and I hope to return in future years with other projects.
