Around Me
From the day we are born our identities are hopelessly entangled with our environment. Gender is especially influenced as our surroundings shape, manipulate, and capitalize on the gender roles and expectations drilled into our unconscious minds. Of course, there are mental health consequences to such a rigid structure for gender.

Seleen Hubbert is a Psychology and Film Studies student at Truman State University. She is an aspiring Social Psychologist but finds joy and meaning in the art of film. Born in Fort Collins, CO, she has helped make music videos for a couple of local artists but this is her first time making something only for herself.
In “Around Me”, I have poured my feelings of anger, frustration, and confusion about how, as a woman, I am to navigate my world. I focus on two key elements: the portrayal of women in media and the ongoing issue of emotional labor. The goal is to rid myself of these internalized expectations; however, this is a daunting and seemingly impossible task.
