Steven Rulon is a Korean filmmaker born in El Paso, Texas. He uses film to connect to his culture of Hispanic and Asian descent. His grandmother, Maeng-In Gomez, used to take him to Arirang Market for various Asian groceries and snacks.
Producing this film was challenging because I noticed a lot of suppressed emotions regarding my identity as an Asian American. I grew up in El Paso so I constantly found myself "blending" into the crowd and this film felt like a release of that. Reconnecting to my childhood store was a special moment during filming, and hearing the experiences of other customers helped me understand the importance of this location, Arirang is a beacon of community and peace.
