Xiao Hui, on the verge of transferring to a new school, was sent to stay at his former snare drum teacher Zheng Tao's house. He gradually discovered the life-altering events his teacher had experienced after being discharged from the military due to an injury. As a result, he attempted to use the beats of the snare drum to uplift this man who had lost his sense of identity and faith. At the moment of their farewell, memories of the two continued to resurface, and he finally received a sincere response from his teacher.

Jiexi Hong, majoring in Digital Media Art (Digital Imaging and Web Video). As the director, the short film "song of snow" was selected by Miami 4 Social Change Youth Film Festival, and shortlisted by Panama Series Festival. As the art director, the short film "Gone with the train" was selected by Beijing University Film Festival, and was selected to the main competition of HCNW 2022 Urban New Wave.

Director Statement

Population mobility and urban-rural change constitute the memories of China's millennials as they grow up. We are all experiencing a grand transformation by Beijing, which has given us equal compatibility to live. But the city has also managed to clean up those aboriginal people at any time. A Pair of Drumsticks is based on Childhood regrets, loss of identity. People indifferently suffered from the environment, which is so large and complex that one is powerless to fight against.

But there is always a moment of diversion between tragedy and reboot, which stems from the powerful emotional capacity of the individual, which can still serve as a kind of "salvation". As the case of Master's frustration and XiaoHui’s leave, we can still pour out the powerful parts of our memories. The tone of Snare Drum is composed of gentle lighting, age-appropriated images and powerful sounds. We choose the DV machine as a narrative medium to link the past and the reality of the transformation of the master-disciple relationship. Hoping that this subjective, personal expression of images can help you remember those important characters who have stayed for a moment in your life experience.
