Anziety
’Anziety’ is Ian’s journey to becoming a drag artist.
Weaving through death, loss, and foster care, he brings us to his darkest moments, yet we end up in a room full of love.
Both a celebration of unwavering loyalty and creative self-expression, Anziety moves between an intimate reflection on Ian’s past and a contemporary portrait of his present.

David O Carroll is an Irish filmmaker. In 2017, he bought his first camera and went on to make 21 episodes of The People We Meet, a short doc series, which was his version of film school. The series opened up a new world of collaboration and has lead to a career in commercial filmmaking as well as music videos, spoken word pieces and fashion films.
In 2021 he collaborated with author Caelainn Hogan (Republic of Shame), to make a short doc for the Irish Times about survivors of Mother and Baby homes.
In 2023, he made an hour-long music special for RTE about The Stunning, commissioned by The Dept of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht. He has recently collaborated with Blur, Ed Sheeran, The Abbey Theatre and the Government of Ireland.
David approaches his work with a deep sense of empathy to create a genuine connection with those he works with, always with the goal of relaying their story with dignity and care.
I was drawn to make the film as I saw Anziety as a true embodiment of artistic expression, joy and community. Starting the film, I knew nothing about Ian's experiences of loss or his difficult childhood. Looking back, I didn’t really even know what drag and performance meant to him.
I see each project as an opportunity to learn. I don't want to know the ending before I start the journey, as my favourite part of the process is responding to the beauty that you find.
During the filming process for Anziety, so much beauty was revealed: in the sustaining love of family, community and friendship; in the transformative power of expression; and the way in which art allows us to communicate feelings and experiences beyond words.
It is a huge privilege to sit with someone and discuss the most tender and delicate moments of their life - and it is an honour to be given the permission to make those conversations into a film. For that reason I feel a massive duty to create something that reflects the truth they have given, and to push my own boundaries to create something that is unique to their story.
