Any Way The Wind Blow

Arkar is a graphic designer who resides in a suburban area of Yangon with his unemployed father. Thazin was Arkar's girlfriend, and their relationship had been cold for months. It's difficult for Thazin to commute from her home to her workplace in the city area. Akar, unlike Thazin, must work alone in his room for the majority of his job, but he also faces difficulties with electronic cutouts. Although Arkar still has the dilemma of leaving the place, Thazin is at the end of her tether and wants to get out of there. Subsequently, Thazin gradually stopped seeing Arkar by convincing her that her extra work would prevent her from missing their dates. Arkar then learned via social media (and through smart devices’ lenses) that his girlfriend had already left the town and was working as a call girl at a club. At that moment, his rage erupts, but he has no power to stop it. Arkar was once told by Thazin that she was taking every opportunity to get away from their suburban region and that she wanted to soar away like airplanes and leave all of this behind. Ultimately, Arkar was all alone in the town by himself, carrying a skite that clings to the sky but is never able to break free like a plane from its string.

Director Biography - Kyaw Zang Oo

Kyaw Zang Oo started his filmmaking career as 16-year-old alumni at the Myanmar Media Development Center (MMDC) back in 2018. Later, he attended the National University of Arts and Culture (Yangon), studying in the Cinema and Drama department, majoring in directing film and theater. After the military coup d'etat happened in 2021, he joined the civil disobedient movement and quit the national film school. Despite the fact that the circumstances in the nation forced the discontinuation of his film school studies, he continued to pursue his film career. In 2022, he attended Vision Creative Academy, filmmaking and cinematography. He was also selected to be an attendee for an exclusive short filmmaking workshop named Myanmar Stories. After learning filmmaking in academic ways, Kyaw Zang Oo decided to find production experience by working as a crew member in mainstream film productions and became a script supervisor for a short film project, which got a production grant from Purin Pictures. He also did his production design work for local TV series and commercials. While working in a variety of film departments, he attempted to use writing as a means of narratively expressing his thoughts, feelings, and experiences which inspired by the current situations of his country. Using film as a medium, he tried to represent the world he lives in and hone his directing technique in his debut short film.

Director Statement

The first time I got the story idea was when my friend took me to the train station where they used to hang out, which later served as the setting for the opening scene of this film, and that's when I initially got the concept for the story. It was North Oakalapa, a suburban township in Yangon that is comparable to the township where I currently dwell. These suburban neighborhoods served as both my observations and my inspiration for many of the story's characters and events. Protagonist, Arkar is a graphic designer who works from home, was dissatisfied with his life due to frigid relationships and issues with the social economy. Additionally, Arkar's girlfriend Thazin, a corporate employee who worked in the downtown area, had a strong desire to escape this township, which subtly imply, the context: young people want to flee their sick nation. All of these character difficulties will symbolize the anguish of young people from lower middle-class families going through this difficult time in the country, which has prompted me to record this period from my perspective on how I perceived it. Plots, events, characters, and sentiments from my personal experience are compacted into a film with an approach of creating an authentic Myanmar cinema.
