Lesha Jay Vescio (she/they) is a filmmaker and actor currently living on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territory of the Musquem people, also known as Vancouver, Canada. She will be graduating with a BFA in film production and minor in French language from the University of British Columbia in 2023. She has directed and produced four films at UBC and is now working in the industry in the art and AD department. Recent film credits include The Grizzly Truth (Set Decorator), Starring Katie Kane (1st Assistant Director), Metempsychosis (Actor), Another (Writer/Director), and Still Playing (Producer). Lesha is particularly interested in telling unusual stories with haunting and heartbreaking themes. She hopes to continue to support the indie film community for the next few years as she finds her footing in film and continues to create in this wonderful world we live in.
In the 1930s, my great-grandmother came to Canada and settled on a farm, in order to escape persecution and starvation caused by Stalin’s brutal regime. Before this, she was placed in a work camp and barely escaped with her life.
In February 2022, history repeats itself. Russia invaded Ukraine and destroyed cities, culture, and innocent lives. Refugees fled to neighbouring countries and continue to do so today, as the war continues on.
This film is for the children who lost their parents and parents who lost their children. For people from war-torn lands that have been displaced, and lack a true sense of belonging. For those with trauma from experiencing things no humans should have to live through.
Another is a short student historical drama that explores feelings of longing, belonging, and acceptance. A family works together to move through their collective trauma, a young girls fears are channelled through folk tales, and farmers struggle to provide on hard, infertile Canadian soil. This story is extremely important to me as a member of the Canadian-Ukrainian community. All the profits of this film will be donated to The Maple Hope Foundation to help victims of Putin’s senseless war.
If film has the power to evoke emotion, film has the power for peace.
