Director Statement

In the 1930s, my great-grandmother came to Canada and settled on a farm, in order to escape persecution and starvation caused by Stalin’s brutal regime. Before this, she was placed in a work camp and barely escaped with her life.

In February 2022, history repeats itself. Russia invaded Ukraine and destroyed cities, culture, and innocent lives. Refugees fled to neighbouring countries and continue to do so today, as the war continues on.

This film is for the children who lost their parents and parents who lost their children. For people from war-torn lands that have been displaced, and lack a true sense of belonging. For those with trauma from experiencing things no humans should have to live through.

Another is a short student historical drama that explores feelings of longing, belonging, and acceptance. A family works together to move through their collective trauma, a young girls fears are channelled through folk tales, and farmers struggle to provide on hard, infertile Canadian soil. This story is extremely important to me as a member of the Canadian-Ukrainian community. All the profits of this film will be donated to The Maple Hope Foundation to help victims of Putin’s senseless war.

If film has the power to evoke emotion, film has the power for peace.
