Another Beautiful Day

Another Beautiful Day follows the last moments in the life of the man in the overcoat. He is an enigma. His actions while they seem rational are quite the opposite. This is a man who has not anticipated the way this day will end. This is a man who is haunted by his past, present and future. A man who cannot face himself.

Director Biography - AK Simba

Ak Simba is Ugandan filmmaker based in Belgium. In 2003, like any other person he started out as a production runner and cable wrangler. He slowly rose to the position of a fixer, doubled as a sound man, then finally as a camera operator. In 2008 he got his first assignment as a prop master for a local film, produced by Great Lake Films. One year later, he got to work on a film produced by Believe Pictures U.S., titled Jamma, as an assistant art director and set dresser. During that same period, he also worked on set on a number of TV commercials for big Ugandan brands such as Nile Special Beer, Umeme, Bell Lager and several others as a prop master and art director. In 2011 he started working as a fixer for Germany based Constantin Films, for their content in Africa. He worked as a prop master on the Disney Film, Queen of Katwe in 2015. After his documentary PLAN-I scooped a couple of international selections and awards, he directed a short fiction film Another Beautiful Day in June 2017. So, it’s safe to say, that he has been working in the film business for the better half of his life.

Director Statement

The original working title of this film was MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL. So, when Sam Tebandeke – the writer shared the script on a WhatsApp group on Uganda filmmakers that I belong to. The script was dissed, torn apart, discredited for being misrepresentative of the African society. I read the script and sent a private message to Sam asking him about the status of the story. At that moment, he had been demoralized and all he had hoped for was someone showing interest in the story. I therefore asked him for permission to produce and direct the film. Once the permission was granted, I therefore requested him to change a few things and the working title was one of them. We had to change location from original screenplay in Uganda to Belgium. The idea of filming the church was most suitable in Belgium since you have a lot of beautiful gothic churches which are usually well decorated but empty. So I therefore went out on a location scout, casting spree and crew sourcing. I originally wanted to work with vintage lenses hence my choice for the 35mm. With a great novice actor as LENNY ELET and a super talented DOP IVO MAES we set out to make ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY.
