Ankai-Tankai

Ankai - Tankai is an audiovisual exploration of the historical site in the Satmala Range hills of western India. Located near Manmad, a railway town in Maharashtra, the twin hills feature Hindu and Jain caves dating back a thousand years. Through a series of sounds, the project seeks to evoke the past that once thrived there, blending it with the present collective experience. The fragmented and jarring effect of the sounds reflects the disturbance of our current society.

Director Statement

In this film, Ankai – Tankai will not be the usual inanimate objects but characters unto themselves having conversation about their shared- distant past and intimate present. Here, this conversation of a shared history will however be disrupted here and there by the constant flow of present ephemeral life happening around this hill- a constant short-lived invasion that the hills have become accustomed to. Buried layers of history will be disclosed by the conversation taking place between the hills, while scenes depicting people’s interaction with this ecology and space will be the particular present disrupting this conversation.
