Angeles FC is my first feature film as a filmmaker. I have put all my dedication, energy, passion, affection, respect and dignity into it. This project crossed work boundaries, making great friendships with all the people involved inside and outside of what is seen in the film.
Through Cristian and the players of Ángeles Soccer team: Valeria, Bianca and Isabel, I seek to portray how love, friendship, and courage are built as a community in complicated environments. Filmed and taking place in Mexicali, the city where I am originally from and reside, it is important for me to portray with dignity and respect the lives of each of the people who allowed me to enter their lives to tell a story of survival and passion. It is through Cristian as the protagonist and guiding thread of the story that we will know what Ángeles Soccer team means to him and to the players; how in this team they have found recreation spaces for their sons and daughters; how through soccer they have created bonds of friendship, a support network that allows them to survive the overwhelming and aggressive everyday life that surrounds them. I seek to make a worthy portrait that they can identify with and be proud of. Through a direct cinema narrative we will see their intimacy, the complications they face everyday and the great moments of happiness and satisfaction that this team gives to the coach and the players.
Ángeles FC is a film that seeks to make visible how sport can be an agent of change and invites reflection to avoid criminalizing precarious environments and the people who live there.
