An Ode to Marwi

The story goes that the evil King Umer, lusting after the beautiful shepherd girl Marvi, kidnaps her and locks her up in his fortress. Despite his best efforts to win her over, Marvi refuses to marry him. Her heart cannot stay confined in his luxurious fortress, and instead longs to roam free in the grasslands that are her home.

This film started with an attempt to capture Marvi's beloved homeland, the grasslands of Sindh and Kutch. But along the way the film-maker encountered the Marvis of today. The women who stay forever in the shadows, unseen and unheard, their existence only felt through their cooking, their handicraft and the children they raise. They are the Marvis confined by their modern day guardians, namely culture and tradition.

This film is an ode to every Marvi whose heart cannot stay confined and longs to be free.
