Amagama Ka Nokutela

Amagama ka Nokutela, which means Nokutela's words or names, honours the life and legacy of South African musician, teacher, essayist, school and newspaper co-founder, Nokutela Mdima-Dube who lived from 1873-1917. It is an independent project, produced and starring an all-Black women collective of South African women. Shot on location at the schools Nokutela studied in and later built, the narration and original 1911 music which was arranged by Nokutela, takes us through the places the hidden figure walked through in her life as a student and teacher in KwaZulu-Natal.

Director Biography - Zimisele Ngubane

Asanda Sizani has carved an inimitable name for herself in the South African fashion industry, having worked for some of the largest brands in the country. Asanda is the former Editor-in-Chief of GLAMOUR South Africa. She previously held the positions of Fashion & Beauty Director for ELLE magazine and Copywriter and Fashion Editor for Woolworths. She made history as the first Black Editor of all GLAMOUR magazine brands worldwide.
Asanda is the recipient of the Media & Advertising award at the Standard Bank Rising Star Awards. The awards recognize excellence in young leaders who have a strong vision for the future and an ability to create it.
A champion for local design and an avid supporter of emerging creative talent, Asanda has served as Curator for Design Indaba while playing a mentorship role to several young creatives such as the photographer, Trevor Stuurman. She is a skilled Stylist who has created campaigns for MaXhosa Africa and Woolworths among others.

In December 2019, Asanda founded Black Editors, a platform for South African editorial heads to empower the next generation of journalists. In 2021, Asanda was approached to Co-Curate The Fashion Yearbook 2021 alongside global VOGUE Art Directors and renowned creatives. In 2021, Asanda was appointed Creative Director of a Netflix project which recreated and reimagined a selection of South African pop culture icons. In 2021, she conceptualised and Executive Produced the project, Amagama ka Nokutela, which encompasses a short film, short documentary, an art and music series inspired by Nokutela, and released a book which she edited, researched and published under Legacy Creates. The book, Nokutela Mdima-Dube 1873-1917 is currently in its fourth reprint since its December 2021 release.
