Alzheimer's & Ice Cream
Alzheimers and Ice cream
Writer and Director Rafe Pugh was inspired by personal experience with his Grandmother, Christine Searle, during her struggle with Alzheimers and Dementia four years ago. The film explores the juxtaposing realms of reality and imagination, provoking the question of what could happen if an Alzheimer's/ Dementia 'host' had full control of their surroundings.
Alzheimers and Dementia are conditions that so many of us have experience of, and will be able to empathise with at some point in our lives. Rafe Pugh discusses how Alzheimer's and Ice Cream is: "an uplifting view of a sad time in my life and the life of my family. Creating a narrative from such an emotive, powerful and personal subject is challenging, yet provides new insight into the intimate, tender and beautiful dimensions of family support, love and even humour in adversity."

Having just completed his Masters in Filmmaking at Sheffield Hallam University with first class honours. Director Raphael Pugh has used the opportunity of his Masters to reengage with pre-production for his debut feature length documentary about Dyslexia, through a biographical lens of a successful and compelling entrepreneur Steve Edge. Being dyslexic himself, and passionate about challenging perceptions Rafe is keen to tell his own story. ‘On The Edge- The Gift Of Dyslexia’ is a 60 minute documentary film examining what it is that makes us unique, and celebrates the life-changing power of the creative spirit in adversity.
Over the past six years Rafe has run Old Empire Productions - focusing mainly on creating online branded content for the automotive industry with clients such as Triumph, Royal Enfield, Barbour, Brother and many more, whilst building one-off custom motorcycles with his business partner at Old Empire Motorcycles.
Starting his career in the industry over 10 years ago in front of the camera, after training professionally as an actor and dancer at Doreen Birds College London and working for a number of years mainly in TV and film, whilst running for Soho post production house The Farm. He returned to university to better refine his understanding of production and re-engage in my passion for learning; incredibly keen and intent on applying his newly acquired knowledge and energy to a his Directing career in the Film and Television industry.
This project was an extremely personal journey of my family in England, that turned into an incredible experience growing a new film family across the world in South Africa. Through making this film it not only helped me come to terms with loss, it also gained me some treasured friends and unforgettable experiences that will last a lifetime on film.
