All Sides of the Spectrum

Rella and Matt Taylor-Byrne are full-time workers and parents to five incredible children. They manage their family with love and strength. This family is like any other big family of seven, however they have one extra challenge to face. Four out of the five children are autistic. However, Rella and Matt do not let this stop them. This documentary follows the difficult journey that this family is on, and the incredible family bond they share.

Director Statement

When I first became interested in filmmaking, I knew I wanted to become a director. For as long as I can remember, I have always appreciated the many beautiful and eclectic aspects of storytelling, particularly through film. I predominantly enjoy the teamwork element in filmmaking, and the honour that comes with being a creative leader.

When I first came across Rella and her story, I knew that it could be translated into a powerful documentary. We were lucky enough to be welcomed into her home, and experience first hand the realities of living with many autistic children. However, All Sides of the Spectrum sheds light on a story that is often untold.

Rella, Matt and their five beautiful children provide authentic and unique insight into the struggles of being a female diagnosed with autism. It is often hard to diagnose, source the
correct treatment and avoid mental illness. Women with autism need a platform to tell the world the reality of their condition and improve the support available. I hope that this documentary can achieve this through the personal and inspirational story of Taylor-Byrne family.

Directing All Sides of the Spectrum was a true privilege that I will always hold dear to my heart.

Although this is not my story, I hope that my personal authorship on how it was told can impact a wide audience and broaden their knowledge on such an important topic.
