Van Nguyen is a Helsinki-based Vietnamese photographer who recently took a leap of faith onto film-making as a director. Known for a refined, human-centered approach, he likes to blend art with empathy, exploring themes that are both intimate and universally relatable.
The idea of "All The Time.", at the very core, came from a frightening phone call that I had with my mother in the spring of 2024, when I received news that they found a tumor in her lungs. For the first time in my life I was forced to confront the thought of potentially losing my family, just to realise that nothing in the world could help me preparing myself for it. Frustrated and scared, I turned to creativity for an outlet, and made it my mission to use grief as an inspiration but to express it in the most calming and hopeful light.
Fashion has always been an interest of mine, it represents identities, moods, and is generally a joyful subject, as perhaps the only sad thing when it comes to fashion is the lack of it. So I thought to use the styling aspect of this film as a tool to bring light into such a dark theme. By making the clothes something that is inherited by one of the characters from her late sister, I aimed to show that even after death, one still lives on in the hearts of others'. The use of colors in the wardrobe was also meant to convey a level of warmth and fondness that comes with remembering a loved one. The candid dialogue was written to add a certain realness to the story. Even with laughters and sighs, the conversation is neither deemed happy nor sad but simply as is, giving the impression of peace.
This is my directorial debut. I was lucky enough to have collaborated with a wonderful collective of people who helped me tremendously in bringing this script to life. Coming from a photography background, I found the film-making process (particularly directing) very eye-opening and fulfilling. I couldn't have learned all the lessons that I did in a more fun way and can't wait to apply them to the next project.
