Director Biography - Delaney Bala, Markus Yu, Jason Hong

We're a trio from all across the United States of America, centered here in Ringling College of Art and Design's computer animation course to complete a thesis together. From left to right, we have Delaney Bala, Markus Yu, and Jason Hong.

Growing up outside of Boston, Massachusetts, Delaney Bala is a story artist who specializes in heartfelt stories and all things fantastical. As an eldest sibling of three, her memories are littered with telling stories to her family and exploring the world outside. Her philosophy is to think in pink and always look for the silver lining. She discovered Ringling College after being recommended by her art mentors. On top of Ringling, Delaney has also participated in clubs such as the Resident Student Association, Ringling Royals, and secured an animation internship at Neoscape Boston over the summer.

Markus Yu is a visual development and storyboard artist located in California. He attended RCAD’s computer animation course to learn more about the industry pipeline so he can be a better vis dev artist; instead, Markus has emerged not only with Maya wrangling skills, but also the terrible knowledge he can be a generalist if the situation becomes dicey. Outside of the computer labs, Markus works as an illustrator and has both hosted and tabled in multiple Artist Alleys across campus. He’s also been commissioned by quite a few Dungeons and Dragons players, which are available in his instagram.

Jason is an animator that was able to witness the boom in artistic creativity near the outskirts of Atlanta, GA. He originally went into architecture and engineering where he found the joys of modeling and creating, but came to the realization he wanted to make the models move instead; thus, animation. Jason strives to challenge himself, and went into Ringling's computer animation program thanks to both location and infamy. He helped establish the first volleyball team in Ringling, and was a student worker on campus in film and photography.

Director Statement

We made this film because all three of us have siblings, and a story centered on that relationship is very personal as its wonderful. Part of why we create is because we want to tell a story that matters; part of why we tell this story is because we have different goals to achieve.

Delaney wants to make a film that embodies the rollercoaster that is sibling love, and shows how important that is in the long run.

Markus wants to make a film that gives him the freedom to create worlds and entice the imagination. It's a plus he gets to design a whale, as all marine animals are awesome, and definitely a plus since he gets to texture cool boats.

Jason wants to make a film that captures the essence of amazement, and the spectrum of emotions from both negative to positive.
