Alice In Melaraland
The idea comes from using the well-known novel by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), currently inflated by the world of cinema, not to tell the story of a girl who falls through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by strange creatures anthropomorphic, but to denounce the degradation of the suburbs and the abuses in the workplace to the detriment of the weakest.
The short film, albeit playing with the same logic as the novel, starts from the daily reality of those who live on the outskirts of the city, understood as a transversal condition that concerns not only the physical expansion of cities, particularly pronounced in the last two decades, but which it includes all those more densely populated areas, where there are phenomena of degradation, marginality, social unease, insecurity and poverty.
Residential construction, often without the necessary services, is the main component of the suburbs and constitutes the main set of the short film, so as to underline the current society which allocates families there who flow into the metropolitan areas attracted by the existing opportunities, without however, ensure the presence of multiple functions (above all neighborhood services) and that social variety essential to create balanced urban communities. The mono-residential function forces most of the residents to commute to work which is not always supported by adequate infrastructure for mobility.
Furthermore, the peripheral settlement not adequately manned with functional or institutional public services has left dangerous voids subject to environmental degradation, criminal settlement, unauthorized use and recurring phenomena of illegality.
To the denunciation of these known facts, the Short Film adds the objective of reaffirming the principles of universal equality which, when violated, can lead to a violent reaction even by defenseless and peaceful subjects, as an implicit (but certainly effective and deterrent) warning to those who, taking advantage of the guilty absenteeism of the institutions, commit abuses and violence against the weakest and most defenceless. In all of us there is an Alice, but in some of us there is also a Queen of Hearts or a Mad Hatter.
