After obtaining a BA Hons degree in Film and TV, producer, editor and cinematographer Alex Lawton founded independent film production company Visual Vybe Productions.
After receiving well documented coverage from the The Sun, FACT Mag and Mix Mag to name but a few, Alex’s debut documentary Rewind 4Ever: The History of UK Garage was released in the Summer of 2013 on iTunes and Google Play. Success after the initial online release of Rewind generated an immediate interest from Television and the media and in November 2013 Rewind was broadcast on The Community Channel (Sky Channel 539) as part of the channels “Brilliant Britain” season. After receiving critical acclaim from UK music press the film went on to gain worldwide recognition, with screenings and promotional events taking place in the US, Sweden, Holland and Ireland. Sound bites from the documentary were featured on Jamie XX's debut solo album "In Colour" which went onto be nominated for 2015's Mercury Music Prize and also Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 58th Grammy Awards.
Rewind 4Ever gained recognition as a rare in-depth documentary and as its popularity and notoriety increased Alex’s next move was to direct and co-produce the short crime drama OUT. Starring Shone Romulus (Top Boy), Joerg Stadler (Saving Private Ryan) and featuring an atmospheric score by Sarah Warne (Des, Catching A Killer), OUT was premiered at 2015’s British Urban Film Festival at London’s Genesis Cinema.
Alex’s skill and talent as a filmmaker spans across many genres and Winter Hill (2018), an intimate short drama which he shot and directed, is yet another example of his multi-faceted craft. Winter Hill proved to be a resounding success on its film festival run in 18/19, winning 2 awards and also 1 Best Drama finalist out of 9 official festival selections.
Always looking to push forward, 2021 proved to be a year of evolution for Alex. Despite prior success as a Producer/Director, his most recent short film, Cold Water, is an example of Alex’s focus on cinematography and also his passion of collaborating with other independent filmmakers. The film was premiered at the 2022 Brighton Rocks International Film Festival and went on to win the “Best in Brighton” award. In addition to this, Alex’s experience spanning over a decade on the front-line of independent filmmaking, combined with his communication skills and organisation, has seen him move into the feature-film world as a Coordinator at the creature fx workshop John Nolan Studio. While at JNS, Alex worked on Wonka (Warner Bros, 2023) as Make-Up FX Coordinator and also as Animatronics Coordinator on the upcoming adventure film The Legend of Ochi.
