Two weeks before I married my wife Florence, who is also the producer of this film, a question suddenly popped up in my mind: if I died, would we meet again in the afterlife? Will people of different faiths go to the same afterlife? After we got married, we left Jakarta for our honeymoon, but this question kept bothering me and I decided to start writing Akhirat: A Love Story in the middle of our honeymoon trip.
While watching this film, I want the audience to question the same thing. I want to invite them to wonder: if the universe separates humans, can the power of love reunite us? To tell you such story, I think there is no better vehicle than the fantasy genre. I believe fantasy stories are able to urge the audience to imagine unusual situations and to re-question the value we hold as human beings.
Because after all, the world might be temporary, but love is forever.
