Director Statement

When I embarked on the journey of creating a film in Puerto Rico, I knew I was taking on an insurmountable challenge. I grew up hearing other people tell me that in order to make films, I had to leave Puerto Rico and that making films here was "an odyssey." During my childhood, a film industry didn't exist here; I would say it still doesn't. I began to question why didn't we ever make our own films. Why wasn't our cinema ever recognized outside of the country? Those are questions with many answers I've come to learn. I made Aguante because I've noticed a growth of local films being made in the past few years. I like to believe that something is changing very slowly; only time will tell. I made Aguante to prove to myself and others that I can make films in my own country and not somewhere else. As the director of this film, I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished against all odds. I hope that our film will not only entertain and captivate audiences but also inspire them to look beyond the surface and discover the stories waiting to be told in the unlikeliest of places.
