After us the Flood

AFTER US THE FLOOD
experimental film, 11:56 min, color, no sound, Karin Hoerler 2024
this video was created exclusively using stop-motion techniques

We cherish a disatrous love for disasters and enjoy watching them, both in news and in science fiction - as long as they don't affect us personally. In AFTER US THE FLOOD, the flood catastrophes are particularly beautiful and even further away from us, because they are drawn, painted, collaged. We love romance: grazing cows, villages with their church towers, hikers in a hilly landscape and the architecture of historic cityscapes. This film serves both passions, the one for catastrophe and the one for romance, and perhaps in this way we will become aware of these contradictory loves.
We have driven ourselves out of the earthly paradise by trying to subdue the earth with all its animals, plants and stones. But they are not subjects to us and the elements of water, fire, earth and air strike back. If we take the very clear signs seriously, it is essential for the survival of the humanity to become meaningfully free for another form of culture. A culture and society that recognizes that what exists independently of us, the animate and inanimate things are equal to us, and together we form a network in which everything has its place and is ready to interact with us in friendship.
