Long synopsis:
In the summer of 2018, Kári, driven by a death wish he cannot fulfill himself, insists that Mæja is the only one who can release him from life’s torment and thus correct a 'cosmic imbalance' she allegedly caused a decade earlier. Struggling with her own trauma and preferring to numb it with intoxicants, Mæja’s life unravels when Kári reappears with his demands. Having lost everything, she seeks retribution for the cycle of vengeance that began in 2008 when Kári, armed with a knife and a cigarette, stalked her father, Jóngeir, intending to extract revenge for past wrongs but only partially succeeding. This traces back to 1992, when Jóngeir confronted his former math teacher over an old cheating accusation, seeking just an apology, which he never received. As these narratives unfold, the intricate connections between the events become clear, climaxing in 2018 with Mæja confronting Kári, the last link in this chain of two-person conflicts. Facing a man who fears no pain and welcomes death ultimately compels Mæja to develop inventive acts of vengeance.
