Sue has been involved in theatre for over 40 years as an actor / director / creator / writer / choreographer / set designer and producer. She has been involved in 25 productions in the Cayman Islands alone through the Cayman Drama Society.
Some of her acting credits here include Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Death of a Salesman, Caytube Live, Moon Over Buffalo, Wit, Steel Magnolias, and a short film for the 48 Hour Film Project called The Gift. Some of her directing and producing credits include Annie Get Your Gun, Haywire, her created show Stomp the Rock, and the now going into its 5th year at CDS, A Playhouse Family Christmas of which she is the creator, writer, director and lead character Frizz. After Work is Sue’s first time writing and directing a film.
I wanted to write a quirky story about a regular guy who encounters a day of irregular circumstances, and how that changes the course of who he thought he was and what his future held for him. I wanted to highlight that sometimes when we lose something we also gain something; how sometimes we don’t know that something is missing in our life until we find it. I knew I wanted Marc Thomas for my main character very early on in the writing process, and I think that the groundwork using his characteristics made for an easier flow going forward.
It was a challenging film given our allotted time at certain locations, having to work in and around customers, a tight shooting schedule and of course the heat and sun for outdoor scenes. Fortunately, we had an amazingly resilient and good-humored cast. We had to work quickly and efficiently, but of course we have an extraordinary producer and shooter in Malcolm Ellis and this is his forte.
Our film is in real time, so another challenge was maintaining continuity over the course of shooting weekends, and the weather was of course a component of that as well. We were very lucky.
This is my first time writing and directing for film (outside of a small comedy piece for a stage sketch) and I certainly look forward to doing others. I love this medium and all that it entails. It was so much fun and we all learned so much during this venture. It was a great group of talented people to work with and we had a wonderful time bringing this little gem to the screen. We hope you enjoy “After Work”.
