A day

The story is about a girl leaving the jungle for a day, leading the audience to experience the real world through her eyes. This work is a reflection on modern civilization. The core part of modern civilization is commerce. In the endless expansion of commerce, where will it lead us? Is the urban living what we like now? Where will our spiritual home be located?
The story takes place in Yueyang, a city in Central China's Hunan Province, with a permanent population of about 1 million. The short film is divided into three main scenes: wilderness, wholesale market and aquarium. The wilderness represents the place we are about to transform, the wholesale market is the place to provide tools for social transformation, and the aquarium is a miniature of our transformation, control and management. The styles of the three scenes are quite different, but there are internal relations between them. The presentation of the theme was expressed through fixed position shooting, tracking shooting and from the actor’s perspective. The background music is original, composed by an American jazz pianist who has never been to China. The short film is 16 ‘50" in length without dialogue.

Director Statement

This is my first short film, I have been making visual work for many years, such as photography, painting, installation. In 2020, one day in my quarantine time in China, I was stuck at home. I couldn’t do anything, except wondering, observing and reading. At that time I had a strong desire to try and film something. Fortunately , we were free to go outside later, I was enjoying to breath fresh air and I started to rethink my views of the city and I was happy to visit around, it was then that I filmed this short film one day. To make this short film provided me with a lot of challenges in a technical and conceptual way. It is a different way of art for me. In the process of filming . I was relying on my instinct and was lucky to find many interesting sites and views in the city…
