Experiencing Interruptions?

Actually Everyone

A foul odor spreads through the apartment building where Cafer lives, yet he is the only one unable to smell it. While the other residents resort to living with masks in desperation, Cafer becomes curious about why he can't sense the smell. A doctor’s visit provides no answers. Though seemingly “lucky,” he grows increasingly isolated. When his trash begins to smell, he creates a foul odor in his home to feel like “them” and regain a sense of security.

Director Statement

The human desire for acceptance and belonging has always intrigued me. The feeling of being unacknowledged by a community creates a sense of loneliness and unease. This often leads individuals to distance themselves from their authentic identity, adopting roles to secure inclusion within a group. The need to belong isn’t exclusive to positive experiences; it also manifests in negative contexts, where individuals may push their boundaries simply to avoid exclusion.

The character of Cafer embodies these themes. As someone rarely embraced by society, his actions are driven by an incessant need for approval, focusing on pleasing others at the expense of his own identity. This pursuit isolates him further, trapping him in a cycle of disconnection. His attempts to adapt amplify his tendency to perform roles, intensifying the gap between himself and those around him.

The story explores the internal conflict and unease that arise from being different, using the abstract concept of "scent" as a metaphor. Scent, invisible yet omnipresent, serves as a representation of Cafer’s inner turmoil and misalignment with his surroundings. The narrative weaves absurdity and tension with moments of humor to create a multifaceted tone.

Visually, I aim to employ static camera setups to present both the character and his environment in long, uninterrupted shots. These medium-length scenes will emphasize Cafer’s disconnection from his surroundings and offer a window into his internal world. Through absurd and disorienting angles, I intend to create a sense of alienation that bridges the viewer with the setting while maintaining an emotional distance from Cafer’s cold demeanor.
