The Academies Film Fest Awards (AFFAs) is the premier student-centered film festival representing the best short fiction films by students, for students attending the Academies of Loudoun. The AFFAs Show is the festival's live-streamed awards ceremony, which is produced by the Television Production and Moviemaking pathway at the Academies.

Awards & Prizes

Award trophies and prizes are granted in three (3) categories:
Best One Scene Live-Action Fiction Film
Best Live-Action Fiction Short Film
Best Animated Fiction

*Please read the category descriptions and genres. Experimental films are NOT accepted.

Rules & Terms

The AFFAs are open to ALL Academies of Loudoun students, no matter the pathway. Students who need assistance with their films are STRONGLY encouraged to join the Academies Film Club for access to filmmaking resources.

Entries must be written, directed, edited and/or produced by a student attending the Academies of Loudoun for the 2022-2023 school year AND conform to a PG-13 rating.

Entries must be an original work created between September 1, 2022 and April 25, 2023 by an Academies student.

Individual applicants may submit a film in more than one category, as long as it meets the category criteria.

Royalty-free stock music is allowable. Licensed, copyrighted music is not. All video and images must be original.

Live-Action Fiction entries must be a minimum of 5 minutes and exceed no more than 20 minutes in length. Animated Fiction entries may be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 10 minutes.

All film entries MUST be submitted digitally (with a shared link).

Once the submission date has closed, the top three finalists from each category will be selected by a panel of judges and announced by May 19, 2023.

Selected finalists may be contacted to record a pre-awards show interview, in person, at the Academies Studio.

Finalist films will be screened during the AFFAs Show, and one official "Winner" from each category will be announced during the live awards ceremony.
