Fantastic films on the coolest street in America. Where the art of film merges with a boulevard famous for fashion, technology, and culture.

Venice, California was founded by Abbot Kinney and modeled after Venice, Italy. It was designated as a place for artists to come and create. This still stands true today, and we're here to offer a canvas for artists to light up the night on creatively placed silver screens projected under the stars, drive in style, and on the side of buildings.

Let's face it, a lot of film festivals are often times boring - set in the confounds of a box. It's time to think out of the box. It's time to think like Abbot Kinney.

There are no rules other than:

It must be fantastic.

It must be cool.

Alternative festival showing alternative films! Gotta love it and indeed I do. I wish I could have attended the AKFF Festival. I was not able to swing it but I sure am thankful that they included my film COFFEE AND CREAM in their program. I didn’t get to attend, my film did! Thanks go out to the ALFFF staff!

  • This festival is a SCAM. It has not happened and I kept being ignored when I emailed and messaged. I only got one message back saying they were “struggling to secure a venue” …. That is all I’ve had from them …

To be clear, the ONLY response I got after trying various was to contact the festival was this :
AKFFF: Hey Delilah I’m having a hard time locking down a venue so I keep pushing it back . I apologize

2 sentences. To which I responded:

    Hey,

Ok sure thing - no worries. Keep me updated if there’s anything else you need. Also is there a laurel to download or anything?

    Thanks
    Delilah

To which once again I got ignored and had no response :(

After I posted this review the owner immediately removed my film from the selected list, and I got an email from the festival owner (surprising as he’s ignored all my other messages …) see the conversation and decide for yourself if this is the type of festival you want to be part of …

AKFFF : Thanks for that review . The festival hasn’t taken place yet, but I’ll be sure to remove your film

Me: So why does Film Freeway say it has?? And asked me to write a review ?

AKFFF: Because a previous date when it was previously listed had passed

Me: You’ve given no information about any changes, not updated film freeway, not updated your nominees, done nothing.

Either get on top your admin and organise the festival properly or expect bad reviews. So far you’ve taken the submission money and done nothing. That is what a scam is.

AKFFF: If I was scamming you I would have not accepted your film, and you wouldn’t have have been able to write a review - good luck

Me: If you were scamming me you’d hold an imaginary festival that never happened … oh wait hang on …

AKFFF: Or I would hold 2 festivals, for over 5 years.. Like I said, good luck, lady. You can Google me, Trevor Simms, and check my record, I just wrapped my second feature, which makes it hard to put on 2 festivals during the years I’m in production. I told you I was postponing the date, some people are friendly and understand - but I’ll be sure to never hire a nasty woman who writes nasty emails or consider anymore of your work

Me: Your charm is really making me want to remove that review.

    AKFFF: Thanks

    Response from festival:

Please remove this review. The festival is not a scam. We will be making an announcement soon in regards to the new venue.

Though it was known on the front end that this would be a "low-key" event, we had no idea that the fest would be held on steps next to a sidewalk and that our films would be screened on a sheet tied to a van. There was no real seating for our guests (outside of steps next to the sidewalk) and there was no private space, as some of the pictures from previous years depicted. There was also no step + repeat for the filmmakers. Our team was so disappointed that we left.

    Response from festival:

That sheet was a movie screen. We’ve had the Abbot Kinney Fantastic Film Festival on the street, Abbot Kinney Blvd, next to a sidewalk, every year except for the year of Covid. There was seating for about 50 people. You paid $5 for your submission. Would you like your $5 back?
