Start with an 18th Century Napoleonic fort as the backdrop to an authentic Japanese Samurai sword-fight; throw in a hint of Rocky Horror Picture Show and two pints of fake blood... and we end up with AXIS; a cinematic, narrative music video for the brilliant hip-hop rapper/producer duo Larwood & Koh.
We're now in a time of such multi-media competition, where 40,000 songs are uploaded to Spotify every single day. So my main preoccupation with this project was simply to create a piece of action-orientated cinema that would captivate the audience enough that they would question the strange world the film is in and begin to build a backstory for who these characters are in their heads. It was also crucial for me to build tension in the story from the beginning, so that the audience felt compelled to watch until the very end for the emotional conclusion. I wanted to create the sense that weโre about to see what happens when an unstoppable force, meets an immovable object.
After listening to the song on repeat, I couldnโt get the image of a dark, dingy space and a Frankensteinesque scene out of my head. I had recently worked with the amazing stunt performer Vitas Le Bas (who plays the creation) and knew I was going to use him for one of my projects at some stage, so why not this one? Once I had decided to include Vitas, the rest of the madness followed and with the help of an incredible designer and DOP, we were able to create a world that hopefully lifts the song and completely baffles anyone who watches.
I hope you enjoy the ride.
