Director Statement

A Way on Another Avenue is a first work and a musical academic short-film. This project is a metaphor for the different paths we have to face every day and the "other avenues" we have to give up, depending on our priorities. This idea reflects the true cycle of life and the existence of a new beginning each morning.

Our life, whether professional or personal, is made of cycles and dynamics that are managed through the process of choosing decisions, some simple others more difficult, but all with an opportunity cost that will bring any consequence in one of the aspects of our life.
Usually, there are two choices that, psychologically, we will have to make: to give up or to insist. Normally, nobody wants to give up, but is it possible? By moving forward in something, don't we end up giving up in something else?

A Way on Another Avenue is just that, a reflection on the game of priorities and choices that we make daily and that have a great impact on our future life. And that, in this case, becomes significant for the character, because it is about her big professional dream, in favor of the stable personal life she has or vice versa. However, we will never know the reaction and the consequences that the choice has, in the future, it can go well or it can go badly and this is something we will never know, we only have one chance.

In this context, the musical moments here serve exactly to expose the feelings and insecurities of the protagonist, in this case, in an almost idyllic Lisbon portrait, where Manu appears alone singing, in an almost perfect Lisbon, as if made in a studio: clean and monumental. In addition, all the presence of iconic Lisbon cultural spaces promotes another knowledge and feeling to a specific audience that knows these places and knows how they can relate to the story and the character, such as: Parque Mayer; Praça da Alegria; Teatro Nacional de São Carlos; Avenida da Liberdade... This means that all spaces are designed to symbolize something for the viewer and the character, as well as, in a more post-production aspect of sound and color, all these elements are placed in order to intensify the environment and the feelings proposed in the dialogues.
