Gareth’s film career has been built upon a solid base of cinematography. Commencing at the New York Film Academy in 1998 he went on to graduate from the Australian Film Television and Radio School (MA Cinematography), in 2004 with the AFTRS High Achievement Award in Cinematography and the ACS Silver Award to his credit. His work on graduating film Blue Poles debuted at the Sydney Film Festival and went on to screen internationally.
Gareth has been an established freelance cinematographer for the last 15years, with a solid reputation for professionalism and craftsmanship, the many projects he has contributed to screening at festivals around the globe. His debut feature as Cinematographer, LBF, premiered at SxSW Film Festival, Austin, Texas in 2011 and has played at Perth Revelations and Sydney Film Festivals.
Since then he has directed photography on over 30 works
across feature, shorts, music clips, documentary and corporate and seen his films screen in festivals in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Australia. In recent years Gareth has increasingly been employed as director on music clips (Disco Biscuit Love – The Jezabels), TVCs (Good Return – East Timor) and numerous corporate videos. He is now is primed to apply his directing talent to short form and long form dramas.
Gareth is also a highly valued teacher at established film schools in Sydney such as the AFTRS and Sydney Film School. Since 2010 Gareth has worked as a tutor for the AFTRS Open, where he runs filmmaking workshops such as “Real Filmmaking” and “Tropfest Jr”. In these courses he is responsible for leading and tutoring groups of young adults in filmmaking from concept and script through shoot, edit and exhibition. In this role he has been pivotal in the creation of over 20 short films.
