Director Statement

Awakening is the second part od a diptych about Free Will.
Based on a poem by Italian poet Giovanni Natale and inspired by director such as Terrence Malick, Lars Von Trier and Christopher Nolan we wanted to give the spectator an experience that have the feelings of a Zen Chinese story about wisdom and happiness.
We also tried to create an unusual musical experience where the score is important to describe the feelings of our character as much as the images. The importance of music to emotionally connect the character's journey with the spectator is highly underrated. Even the end title's song it's still part of the cathartic experience we want the spectator to live.
As for the the theme we wanted to concluded what we started with our previous short "The Order". Once we accept that our mind is constantly controlled by external stimulations and society tell us how to live, how can we achieve freedom? What are our priority in life? What are we afraid of to be truly happy? How can we overcome our fears?
The answers are behind The Gate.
