THE HOMEWORK

"The Homework" is a dramatic short film that captures the complexities of many Brazilian households. We follow the story of Caio, a seven-year-old boy, and his mother, Jacira, a dedicated domestic worker who raises her son alone. Amid his mother's absence from school events and with the support of his teacher, Caio faces daily challenges until the arrival of Luiz, a new family member, brings a hopeful twist.

Director Biography - Lucy L

Lucy L (Luciele Lima) is a brazilian screenwriter. Her debut feature screenplay, A Melody of Awakening, produced by Inspira Filmes, has been gaining recognition at festivals around the globe. With a portfolio that includes both feature and short film scripts, Lucy L collaborates with renowned production companies, paving her way in both the Brazilian and international markets. Additionally, she has conducted numerous workshops for young talents, encouraging the next generation of storytellers. As a writer-director, some of her most recent works include the short films Colors, Right Next Door, and The Homework.

Lucy L (Luciele Lima) é uma roteirista/diretora do centro-oeste goiano. Seu primeiro longa, Um Acorde Para Despertar, produzido pela Inspira Filmes, tem se destacado em festivais nacionais e internacionais. Com um portfólio que abrange roteiros de longas e curtas, Lucy L colabora com produtoras renomadas, trilhando caminhos tanto no cenário brasileiro quanto no internacional. Além disso, já ministrou diversas oficinas para jovens talentos, incentivando a próxima geração de contadores de histórias. Como roteirista-diretora alguns de seus trabalhos mais recentes são os curtas Cores, Ao Lado e A Tarefa, todos aprovados pela Lei Paulo Gustavo em 2023.

Director Statement

"The Homework" dives into the emotions, struggles, and hopes of single-parent Brazilian families in challenging socioeconomic conditions. Through the eyes of Caio I aim to honor and bring visibility to the experiences of these mothers who bear the responsibility of raising their children alone. I grew up in a setting similar to Caio's, with a mother who, like Jacira, dedicated her life to domestic work in other families' houses to support our family. The arrival of a new member in Caio’s life represents the opportunity to question and expand our understanding of family dynamics, offering a sensitive view of the many ways that love and family can take shape.

"A Tarefa" mergulha nas emoções, lutas e esperanças de famílias brasileiras monoparentais em condições socioeconômicas desafiadoras. Através dos olhos de Caio, busco homenagear e dar visibilidade às experiências dessas mães que carregam a responsabilidade de criar seus filhos sozinhas. Eu cresci em um contexto semelhante ao de Caio, com uma mãe que, assim como Jacira, dedicou sua vida ao trabalho doméstico nas casas de outras famílias para sustentar a nossa, por isso trata-se de um projeto muito pessoal para mim.
