Waterford Film Centre presents ‘Space Oddities: the Comedy and Sci-Fi Film Festival'. This year it is a blended festival with online screenings showcasing work from filmmakers from around the world. Locally we will be launching the festival with an exciting public event: drive-in movie experiences featuring both comedy and science fiction greatest hits.

WFC’s festival mission is to present Ireland’s most exciting, hilarious and entertaining independent annual film festival, connecting and stimulating audiences and artists through a carefully curated selection of the best comedy and science-fiction films, to create a unique shared cultural experience, rooted in Waterford, open to the world. By curating and presenting a programme of exceptional films created by science-fiction and comedy enthusiasts, we present films that are accessible to all. Between science-fiction and comedy, there will be film works that everyone will enjoy and will root for to win a prize.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Each film must be submitted with a working screener and be paid in full to be considered.

SUBMISSION CATEGORIES: Feature films and short films from the genres of comedy and science fiction are open for submission to the festival.

Feature films and short films are also selected by invitation by the festival.

Please read the submission categories carefully to determine where your submission belongs. If you feel you’ve entered incorrectly please contact us at spaceodditiesfestival@gmail.com. Films will be considered for awards based on categories entered. Submission to multiple categories is not encouraged. Space Oddities reserves the right to determine eligibility of a submission in each category.

Waterford Made: Waterford Made exists as its own category at Space Oddities Festival. To enter as a Waterford Made film you must meet one of the following criteria:
-Project was partially shot in Waterford.
-Director or Producer currently resides in or is from Waterford.

Films must not have screened publicly in the Waterford City area prior to the 2021 Space Oddities Film Festival. We strongly prefer films that have not yet screened in Ireland. Cast and crew screenings are acceptable as long as they are not open to or advertised to the public.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Films that have been previously screened publicly in theatres in Ireland, aired on Irish television, or are available online for viewing in their entirety (as part of a distribution plan, including publicly accessible YouTube and Vimeo links and all streaming platforms) prior to or during the festival September 16th - 19th, 2021 are NOT eligible to screen. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE SCREENINGS AT FILM FESTIVALS (virtual or physical) PRIOR TO Space Oddities.

SCREENING FEES: Space Oddities Film Festival DOES NOT PAY SCREENING FEES for submitted films. By submitting your project, you acknowledge that Space Oddities will not pay to present your work.

EXHIBITION FORMATS: All films should be uploaded to FilmFreeway at time of entry. We will, however, request the option to download from FilmFreeway to our own server for judges to view. We currently do not accept DCP. We only accept .MP4/.MOV. (Resolution = 1920×1080 to 3840×2160, FPS = As Shot, Sound Mix = Stereo, Data Rate = Uncapped, Codec = H.264)
If we ask for your film to be sent to us direct, please send via any online file transfer service. We suggest: Wetransfer (2GB) – GoogleDrive (15GB)

LANGUAGE: Films produced in languages other than English must have English subtitles. Films with no subtitles will not be considered for Space Oddities. No refunds will be given to films submitted and not considered due to lack of subtitles.

STUDENT FILMS: Students MUST provide proof of student status (copy of student ID) at the time of production. A photo of the ID is to be uploaded with production stills to FilmFreeway. Films submitted within the student category but without ID will not be considered for Space Oddities 2021.

WORKS IN PROGRESS: Works-in-progress are accepted and should be noted as such. All incomplete materials or changes should be clearly marked in a cover letter and preferably in the film cut. The submitter may update until the final submission deadline as long as the link and password remain the same.

*Space Oddities is only responsible for considering the project as it exists at the time of review. We are under no obligation to revisit updated cuts once a screener has been seen. Therefore, you should not submit your project if it is not complete enough to adequately represent the final product.

Short films may be included on a compilation screened as part of our nationwide and international promotion.
