A SINGLE SIMPLE GAME

Inspired by Stefan Zweig's insane novel "a chess story" and with the collection "CAISSA", the film takes the form of all the chess pieces on a single chessboard. It goes beyond the deepening of the concepts of "main player" and "full control" and fulfills its tasks like any piece in the game.

Director Statement

The film was inspired by Stefan Zweig's novel „a chess story". The psychological and emotional situation of Dr.B., the protagonist of the book, was very complex and dark.
A single model in costumes with chessboard patterns, inspired from the 18th century; It animates 16 different characters and 16 different chess pieces on the chessboard, which reflects these complicated emotions.

Who which contain contrasts of madness and innocence, signified with black and white, are all the same person, but each costume has a different feeling, a different task. This reinforcements of all these contrasts with the use of light was one of the most nurturing elements of the film.Fragmented background lights, checkered ground created with light and shadow on the ground, and characters moving from light to shadow, shadow to light with each frame change.

The use of dynamic and moving camerawork supports the characters' struggles on the checkered board and the complexity of their mental state. I think the cinematic language in which we use techniques like tracking, vertigo and crash zoom is the style that best fits the story flow and atmosphere.

Supporting character movement with the use of cameras and lighting was one of my main goal. I wanted to do the same with the music. The women's Middle Eastern-style chanting used in the preparation scene at the film's introduction tells the story of chess. Each piece prepares for the upcoming battle and finally begins the game at the command of the king. From this point on, the sound design also tries to decorate all the characters and the film, transforming the visual narrative into an auditory form in their movements.

If we watch the entire film, we will see a contrasting but intertwined world where we can easily see the connections between history and technology.
