Zoe Rothwell is one of the organisers of Bolton Film Festival and has been a key figure in helping to promote independent film within the North West of England. Ordinarily her work involves programming films and coordinating the event but with this intimate documentary Zoe turns the camera on herself and her mother as they travel back to the island of Jersey where it all began.
“A Pinch” is a personal travelogue/documentary that uses the cinema verité approach of film making. I took inspiration from my indie film-making days when I was hugely influenced by Chris Marker’s ‘San Soleil’, Andrew Kotting’s ‘Gallivant’, D.A. Pennebaker’s ‘Don’t Look Back’ and not forgetting Dziga Vertov’s 'Man with a Movie Camera'
Embracing the DIY culture this ode to the holiday video also sits within the realms of essay film or memoir exploring the relationship between a mother and daughter, the human condition and the impermanence of life.
