Director Statement

Early in 2021 my producer-partner María and I finished 'You Are Here' with the support of NI Screen - so we wanted our next project to be smaller and more personal.

'A Phone Call' channels the drama and subtlety of classic European cinema. My reference for this film was Krzysztof Kieślowski, specifically the film 'Three Colours Blue' and the Dekalog series. We tried to shoot this as if it were an episode of Dekalog.

The drama hinges on a moment of chance and a random connection between two people - the story sounds like an urban myth or something you heard really happened to a friend of a friend.

I picked two strong actors and asked them to work with moments of silence and expectation. In real life, we don't often speak out loud what's really on our mind.

I wanted to create a powerful and meaningful moment with just two characters, in just two short scenes, and I'm so proud of the results.
