ANIMA

ANIMA is a brooding psychological thriller examining the gradual breakdown of a relationship. The film follows Daniel, who has gone to a cottage deep in the Swedish forest with his girlfriend
Elisabeth. He suffers from a mysterious disease which makes him pale and catatonic, and the pair have gone to the cabin in the hope that the quietness of the forest will help him heal. Elisabeth
insistently tries to cure Daniel and grows increasingly frustrated with his condition. Meanwhile, Daniel starts to see mysterious signs in the forest and enters fits of trance. Deep, supernatural powers
are beginning to take hold of his body, and a transformation that will change everything begins.

Director Biography - Lasse Mathias Reinhardt

Lasse Mathias Reinhardt (b. 1990) has studied philosophy and comparative literature at Copenhagen University before attending Copenhagen Film and Photo School, where he was
inspired to be a writer and director.

As a film maker Lasse is inspired by stories of rites of passage and the mythical. In his films he searches for the place where the deeply personal and the universally human are connected. The experiences in the life of each person that say something about life as such – this is the territory of the myth.

Director Statement

ANIMA has been part of a personal process of rediscovery after a broken relationship. The point of departure for the film was this very personal, yet deeply universal experience: the break-up. I wanted to investigate the violent and conflicting forces I myself had experienced: how a love that has stagnated becomes an all-enveloping, congested bubble – but also the explosive forces that are released when the bubble is bursting. The hard-won realisation that sometimes, the old must die to make way for the new. Only by giving give the drama a supernatural did I feel able to do this experience justice. Two people alone deep in the woods, the age-old site of transformation. I wanted to create a world, in which the everyday blends with the archetypical and mythical.
