Director Cheng Zhong grew up in Hefei, China and attended Emerson College’s film production major in 2020. After the first year of his college, he worked in Hengdian World studio as the body double of the main character, Zhu Zhanji, in the Chinese TV series ‘The Worship of the Delicacy’ that premiered on February 22, 2022. After working on this project, this film is his directorial debut. Cheng then directed Piano Voices from Yale to China, which is a 53-minute -documentary that premiered and streamed on December 20, 2021 on the Chinese video platform Tencent Video, Tencent Music and Tencent Art. His main career goal is to become a industrial filmmaker for a major production company.
I chose to direct this film because I always commit myself to find and tell stories of ordinary characters, the nobodies, the bottom tier of the work class. I want my audiences to experience the kind of lives of those ordinary workclass who are burdened with great expectations from their families and their pressures from life. I also want them to experience pure happiness when there exists no burdens and social morals, obligations and rules that bind them tightly. I was inspired by The Pursuit of Happiness to create this film, that it quotes Thomas Jefferson from The Declaration of Independence: “All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” In that film Chris Gardner finds his way to success, but in this picture, the protagonist can only pursue his happiness in his hallucinations, himself regretting what he did and who he hurt in the hallucinations but he can’t help with it. Working with those actors and actresses was special because they have little experience working on film projects, but they showcased their talents interpreting those characters, in which it is my pleasure to interact with them to present the best visuals to describe this way of life.
