Director Biography - Davon Cecil, La’Tia Owens

Director Biography: Davon “Von” Cecil is 22 year old, young, black man from Campbellsville, Kentucky. He grew up watching films like Paid in Full, New Jack City, He Got Game, Life, and Four Brothers; films which sparked his interest in film and television. For years he never pursued film in any capacity (writing, directing, acting, or even videography) and the reason behind this was due to his lack of exposure to what was possible. It wasn’t a dream or career he felt comfortable sharing because school/college was always in the future for him. His experiences led him to constantly suppressing and compartmentalizing his true aspirations and feelings. While that was aside he continued his movie watching, tv analyzing, and studying of cinematography. Playing the varsity sports: basketball and track & field, going on to briefly run track & field in college. While in college for a degree in Sports Management, he decided to begin writing film & tv, video concepts, and even drafted a script. Once he graduated, he felt it was the refresher he needed and had managed to work through some of his uncomfortableness. After a lot mental contemplation he finally decided to START. That leads to now, his first short film titled, “A Man”, inspired and based on real events in his life.

Director Statement

The vision behind this short film traces back to my childhood. Going through traumatic experiences, deprived emotionally, and unable to express my feelings. I felt like this was the perfect chance to start telling my story with the art of storytelling. If anyone knows me I’m a typically quiet and reserved person which explains the semi-silent concept to the film; mentally black men have constantly faced ridicule for expressing insecurities, feelings, and emotions. Although actual people show their support and provide resources, social media still serves as a catalyst against understanding the psyche of the black man. This film speaks not only to black men, not only to black women, not only to black children but to all people who come from a place of being misunderstood, alone, unheard, and live with those intrusive thoughts that can be overwhelming to our minds. The film is a hand out, it doesn’t have the best production, audio, or editing but the message is far more behind the visuals. This film is to stand in solidarity with ALL people who feel, are going through, or have went through challenging times that seem to be a reoccurrence. I put my hand out to join with those individuals and let them know I’m with you, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
