Meet Deirra, a talented and passionate documentary filmmaker from Brooklyn, New York. Born and raised in the heart of the city, Deirra grew up with a deep appreciation for the diverse cultures and unique stories that surrounded her. She was always captivated by the power of film to tell important stories and shed light on important issues. A Mom Story - Embrya is her first documentary, which explores the intricacies of black motherhood. Through her powerful storytelling, stunning visuals, and nuanced approach to complex issues, Deirra sheds light on an often-ignored aspect of motherhood. Her documentary sparks important conversations about race, gender, and parenting.
Black women must control the narrative in film because they bring a unique perspective and experience to storytelling. For too long, Hollywood has been dominated by people who have perpetuated harmful stereotypes and marginalized communities of color. By giving black women the platform to tell their own stories, we can break down these barriers and create a more inclusive and diverse film industry. Black women have stories that need to be heard, and it's time for them to take control of their narratives.
Deirra is deeply committed to uplifting and empowering underrepresented voices in the film industry. She serves as a community producer and a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the industry. Her unwavering dedication to her craft and her community is truly inspiring and serves as a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work, determination, and a deep passion for storytelling.
The film focuses on Tanika Williams who gives her perspective of her Black mother's impact through the eyes of an adult daughter.
Tanika explains phrases used in the Black community like children should be seen and not heard, why her mother did not have the language or safe space to explain what she felt, and how they can have a better relationship.
I hope to increase the representation of underrepresented African American women directors.
