ALWAYS ONLY IN AFRICA

ALWAYS ONLY IN AFRICA
directors cut, experimental film, 7:59 min, colour, no sound, Karin Hoerler, 2023

A family is seen on their camping site and the arounding landscape and traveling to it. They are seen in winter, spring, summer and autumn. Their other home is never seen. We observe them like birds in front of our window. They arrive, stay a while and leave again to the place where they live, work, and send their children to school. Than suddenly they are back again - in their, and our Africa.
The images come from old super-8-movies and after scanning each single frame, I varied them in shape and form. So the viewer finds himself in a space of stunning beauty, it is like being in a moving painting. It is easy to lose oneself in the beauty of the images, only successively perceiving their fragmentary narrative.
I work in my art with the little or invisible structure of the images and make them visible. Thus, in this film, too, all images are permeated by a fabric that condenses people and things into an inseparable unity. This makes it difficult for the viewer to penetrate the images, to bring the objects to himself and to examine them, until in one of the scenes he is confronted with a very direct contact that seems to break through the veil.
