Director Biography - Ludovic Gicquel

Born in Paris in 1975. His father, who worked for the Paris Fire Department, gave him a taste for the cinema and music at a very young age. From the age of 15 to 22, he played music (piano, guitar), and finally began to produce his first images. He began his audio-visual career as an assistant in television shows such as Le Bigdil, La Zone Rouge and Attention à la marche. He teamed up with Jérémie Rolland and they set up a production company together. He bought the rights to the programme The Phone (produced in the United States by JusFn Timberlake for MTV) and also created a TV game called Now Boarding, which ultimately was not produced. The desire to write fiction was so strong that Ludovic decided to move away from the world of game shows. He lel the production company to study for a degree in journalism, then set up his own production company. AENARIA PRODUCTION was set up in 2014, in association with the person who passed on this lifelong passion to him, his father. Thereafter followed 400 corporate films produced for several major companies. He also directed an advertisement for the future French and world champion in Muay Thai, Bampara Kouyaté, as well as the music video for singer Mazy: "Je t’attendrai". In 2019, he decided to improve his skills by training as a scriptwriter and taking a John Truby Masterclass. In 2020, he wrote the short film ALICE, which is being marketed at festivals. He met Thomas Garcia and together they wrote the feature film JE COMPTE JUSQU’À TOI.

Director Statement

The idea for Alice first came from reading a major national daily (in 2019). The paper’s front page led on the sentencing
of a mother to twenty years in prison for killing her five babies. The article and the journalist highlighted just how difficult it is to understand the reasons why a mother would carry out such an act. The journalist added: "It is even harder to imagine children developing properly in such circumstances". It is this second aspect that leaves me wondering and makes me want to go deeper into the subject. I wanted to use infanticide as a backdrop to the story, nothing more. This film seeks to look into the withdrawal, questioning and introspection a young twenty-five-year-old woman might go through on discovering that her parents are not her biological parents. And what is worse, they lied to her all those years. I also wanted to show a certain dichotomy in the main character. The confrontation of two people who do not know each other and who will have to unite as one to be able to move on. Very quickly questions arise for Alice should I meet my biological mother? Do I have part of my parents' DNA? Am I like them or like her?
