A Jefferson State of Mind: The Politics of Recognition in Northern California

In the early 21st-century there has been a global resurgence in right-wing populist political movement. Much of these politics are based on constitutionalism, conservativism, self- autonomy, and a laissez-faire state. As political anthropologists, the film makers question if these concepts are at odds with democratic and liberal principles based on inclusion and human rights for everyone. A Jefferson State of Mind is filled with detailed and diverse interviews of people living in the area. There is striking natural footage, including unparalleled drone photography that captures the splendors of Northern California. This film pulls the viewer into the magnanimous beauty of Northern California and also into the subtle complexity of its political world. Will there ever be a 51st State?
